Neurosurgery “When there’s no CT-scan”

Thursday 10th of October, 8:15-12:15 and 13:00-17:00 hr.

Subjects

Basic theoretical principles of neurotraumatology (head and spine), fundamental practical skills for managing patients with head and spine injuries, with a particular emphasis on approaches applicable in resource-limited settings.

Objectives

  • Participants will learn how to assess patients with traumatic brain and spine injuries.
  • Participants will learn the basic principles of performing a simple craniotomy for clot removal from the brain and for exploratory burr holes.
  • Participants will learn basic techniques for assessing and managing cranial fractures.
  • Participants will learn safe management strategies for patients with spinal injuries (spine immobilization and stabilization, log rolling, establishing a referral plan).

Practicals

Exploratory burr hole; supratentorial craniotomy; cleaning and debridement of cranial wounds; spinal immobilization and stabilization; log rolling.
