Prof. Henning Mothes (MD, PhD) is a specialist in Surgery, Trauma Surgery, and Specialized Visceral Surgery, with a diploma in Tropical Medicine and Public Health. He completed his surgical training at the University Hospital Jena and has been the Chief Physician of the Department of General, Visceral, and Vascular Surgery at the Weimar Hospital since 2019. He has been a member of the German Society for Global and Tropical Surgery since 1994, serving as Chairman of the DTC since 2015 and as Chairman of the Surgical Working Group Global Surgery of the German Society for Surgery from 2018 to 2024. With three years of surgical experience in LMICs at the Zomba Central Hospital in Malawi, he actively contributes to the Zomba Hospital Project e.V. in Jena for 25 years. His research in Global Surgery includes investigations into the genesis of endemic esophageal carcinoma in Malawi, TERT mutations in the urine of patients with Schistosoma-associated bladder carcinoma, and the establishment of National Surgical Plans (NSOANP’s) in LMICs.
