Bernward Steinhorst (MD) is a General, Visceral and Orthopedic Trauma surgeon. His strong interest in Emergency Surgery is the base of his current job as surgical head of the Emergency Room at Rotes Kreuz Krankenhaus Bremen. His second position is as a staff surgeon at St. Martin de Porres Hospital in Eikwe, Ghana, a Catholic District Hospital, where he works at least two months every year and also supports with logistics, organization, and structures. He has established a hospital partnership between his German and Ghanaian workplace dedicated to training medical professionals. Beyond that he is a regular with Doctors Without Borders lending his expertise in Emergency Surgery in the world’s conflict zones. Naturally this goes with a strong commitment to teach and infect his younger peers with his enthusiasm for Global Surgery. Bernward’s own training has been at Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf (Medical School), Duke University in Durham, North Carolina (Anthropology) and East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina (Surgery Residency) as well as Unfallkrankenhaus Berlin (Trauma).
