Serena Cruz (PhD) holds a PhD in the social sciences. She is a practicing medical ethnographer with career experience in war-time rape data collection; clinical treatment for sexual violence in conflict; infectious disease studies, specifically, HIV and the sex-trade in Eastern and Southern African slums; and, since 2020, global surgery. She is the President of the Global Surgery Umbrella (GSU), which supports access to safe and affordable high-quality, sustainable, and resilient Emergency, Critical, and peri-and-Operative (ECO) Care on demand, regardless of patients’ identities and/or their social, political, and economic position in the world (globalsurgeryumbrella.org).
